Immaculate Conception Church
Founded in 1894, Immaculate Conception is the older of the two Catholic parishes in Denton. A welcoming and friendly parish family, our community is multi-cultural and multi-ethnic, with more than twenty-five hundred registered families. Our ethnic and cultural diversity is one of God's many valuable gifts to us; we draw upon many backgrounds and the Lord is made real through our individual characteristics. From this diversity, we have been called together to be a local church that has its roots worldwide.
HISTORY OF IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church turned 100 in 1994 and we had plenty to celebrate!
Mass was celebrated by Father Francis X. Meilinger on the second floor of a two-story barn-like structure from 1890-92. Between 1893 and 1894 the new parish was built on a foundation of hand-hewn logs.
Father John Lenert arrived from Chicago to assist Father Meilinger with the Denton, Sanger, Celina, Pilot Point, and Whitesboro mission churches until 1900. By the turn of the century, Denton's small wooden mission was enlarged and a rectory was built. In 1901, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church was assigned its first resident pastor, Father Raymond Vernimont. Under the influence of this dedicated priest, the church and its missions continued to grow and prosper until his death in 1935.
Father Charles Smid succeeded Father Vernimont. During his tenure the church and the rectory were completely redecorated. The parish also acquired a house next to the church and designated it as a social center. This recreation hall soon became a gathering place for Denton's increasing number of Catholic college students, who formed a Newman Club there.
In February 1946, Bishop Lynch appointed Father Smid to a newly formed parish in Abbot, Texas, and transferred Father Walter C. Bojniewicz to Denton. The church was again enlarged and redecorated between 1946 and 1954 to increase seating capacity. The parish grew to serve the spiritual needs of Catholics in Denton, Argyle, Roanoke, Sanger, Justin, Krum, Ponder, Lake Dallas, and Lewisville, as well as the over 300 college students who formed the two Newman Clubs attached to the parish.
Father George Groeneger, who became pastor in 1954, recognized that the original church was too small and beyond repair. Under his directions, plans for a new church were made.
Father Henry McGill, who became pastor in 1955, built a new air-conditioned Immaculate Conception Church on the corner of Second and Elm Streets. The construction of a parish center was started in 1960 and completed in 1966 under the leadership of Father Joseph Thomas, who followed Father McGill as pastor in 1960. It was also during Father Thomas' tenure that the altar in the church was turned around to face the congregation, due to the mandates of Vatican II. Father Robert Littleken and Father Richard Johnson followed Father Thomas as pastor.
On October 21, 1969, the Fort Worth Diocese was created and John J. Cassata was named Bishop. Reverend Joseph Schumacher was appointed as pastor, and Denton was now a part of the new diocese. During his tenure, Sister Kay Kolb and Sister Pat Miller of the School Sisters of Notre Dame joined the parish staff as assistants to work in the total parish ministry. In October 1972, Lewisville formed its own parish, St. Phillips. The first Spanish Mass was begun at Immaculate Conception on a trial basis. At the time of Father Schumacher's transfer in 1980, the parish had grown to over 700 families.
Father Jerome Mosman was appointed pastor in 1980 and in 1981, the church was renovated to increase seating to 375. Also in 1981, the Diocese named a new Bishop, Joseph P. Delaney. In 1984 Fr. John Mitchell was named as pastor and our first Hispanic assistant pastor, Father Hector Medina, joined the staff.
Several changes took place in 1986 when Father Daniel Williams was appointed pastor. Property was purchased on Bolivar Street, 3 houses, to expand the present parish center and for additional parking in the future. In 1989 construction began on renovation and addition to the parish center. On December 31, 1990, a multi-purpose building was dedicated as a satellite of the parish. It was on the corner of Teasley Lane and Pennsylvania Street, to the south of the main church. By 1991 the parish had 1850 families registered, more than doubled from 1975.
Father Karl Schilken became pastor of Immaculate Conception in 1992. This was his second assignment to our parish, as he had served as assistant pastor from 1982-84. During his tenure, the Teasley Lane facility was named Saint Mark Church, and it split the following year from the mother parish. He appointed a Pastoral and Finance Council and a group to begin planning for our future. He opened a St. Vincent de Paul house west of the church to provide food and clothing for the needy and redesigned the sanctuary and placed a new tabernacle in the church. In 1995 Immaculate Conception Catholic School was opened in the parish building with grades pre-k through 2nd. Each year another grade would be added. An additional house at 1401 Bolivar was purchased for future growth.
In 1996 Fr. Juan Rivero was named pastor. Additional Advisory Councils for the parish were appointed. As the school and parish grew, Fr. Juan encouraged looking into the future to meet growing space needs for the parish and school. A Steering Committee was appointed to coordinate this. A plan to increase the present worship space was put aside as more property was needed to do so.
In August of 2000, Msgr. Charles King was named pastor. Twenty-one acres of land at the corner of Bonnie Brae Street and Windsor Drive were purchased for a new parish plant to include an education facility, gym, Church, offices, and rectory.
A school Building Committee was formed and plans drawn up with a construction completion date for the school of July 2001. The Elm Street plant was sold and the parish transitioned from the Church on Dec 26, 2003, to mass in the gym of the school. The office building was completed in February 2004 and we vacated the Elm Street offices on February 20, 2004. The new Church was completed in October 2004 and was dedicated on October 10, 2004
HISTORIA DE LA IGLESIA
INMACULADA CONCEPCION
En el año de 1994 la Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción celebro su centenario de haber sido fundada.
Entre los años de 1890-1892 El Padre X. Meilinger celebraba las misas en el segundo piso de un granero. Después entre 1893 y 1894 fue construida la Iglesia con troncos de madera.
El Padre John Lenert vino de Chicago para asistir al Padre Meilinger con las comunidades de Dentón, Sanger, Celina, Pilot Point y Whitesboro, siendo estas solo Iglesias misioneras hasta el año de 1900.A principios del siglo pasado la pequeña Iglesia de madera fue ampliada y se le construyo una rectoría. En el año de 1901 a la Iglesia se le asigno un sacerdote permanente que fue el Padre Raymond Vernimont este sirvió a la comunidad de Dentón hasta su muerte en el año de 1935.Bajo la Influencia de esta párroco la Iglesia prospero y creció.
El Padre Charles Smid sucedió al Padre Vernimont. Durante los años de servicio del Padre Smid la Iglesia y la rectoría fueron redecoradas, también la Iglesia compro una casa cerca de la Iglesia la cual fue rediseñada como centro comunitario. Este centro de recreación sirvió para que los estudiantes católicos formaran un club.
En febrero de 1946, el Obispo Lynch transfirió al Padre Smid a una nueva Parroquia que se estaba formando en Abbot Texas, sustituyéndolo por el Padre Walter C. Bojniewicz. Entre los años de 1946 y 1954 la Iglesia fue nuevamente ampliada y remodelada. La parroquia fue creciendo y sirviendo en sus necesidades espirituales a los católicos de: Dentón, Argyle, Roanoke, Sanger, Justin, Krum, Ponder, Lake Dallas, y Lewisville, así mismo a los estudiantes de la Universidad los cuales formaron el club Newman adherido a la Parroquia.
El Padre George Groeneger, quien comenzó como párroco de la Iglesia en el año de 1954, vio que la Iglesia era pequeña y necesitaba muchas reparaciones así que bajo su dirección se planeo construir un nuevo edificio para la Iglesia.
El Padre Henry McGill, quien fue el párroco en el año de 1955, se instalo el aire acondicionado en la Iglesia construida en la esquina de las calles Second y Elm. La construcción del centro parroquial fue comenzada en 1960 y terminada en 1966 bajo la dirección del Padre Joseph Thomas, quien siguió como párroco después del Padre McGill también durante la época del Padre Thomas el altar de la Iglesia fue girado hacia el frente de la congregación, siguiendo los mandatos del Vaticano II. Después del Padre Thomas, el Padre Robert Littleken y el padre Richard Jonson fueron los párrocos.
El 21 de Octubre del 1969, la Diócesis de Fort Worth fue establecida y en Octubre 21, 1969, y John J. Cassata fue nombrado Obispo. El Reverendo Joseph Schumacher fue nombrado párroco. Durante ese periodo, la hermana Kay Kolb y hermana Pat Millerde de la Escuela de Notre Dame se unieron al personal de la parroquia para asistirlos en los ministerios. En el año de 1972, Lewisville creo su propia parroquia llamada St. Phillips. La primera misa en español fue una prueba piloto. Para cuando el Padre Schumacher fue transferido en el 1980, la parroquia había crecido a más de 700 familias.

Varios cambios tomaron parte en 1986 cuando el Padre Daniel Williams fue designado como párroco. Fueron adquiridas en la calle Bolivar, tres casas, para expandir el centro parroquial y para un estacionamiento. In 1989, la construcción empezo para la renovación y expansión del centro parroquial. El 31 de diciembre del 1990, un edificio para varios servicios fue dedicado como un centro parroquial localizad en la esquina del sur de las calles Teasley y Pennsylvania. En el 1991 la parroquia tenia 1850 familias registradas, el doble del 1975.
El Padre Karl Schilken se hizo párroco de la Inmaculada Concepción en el año 1992. Este fue su segundo trabajo para nuestra parroquia desde que fue asistente de párroco en el curso de 1982-84. Durante su periodo, la instalación de la Teasley Lane, se hizo independiente y se creo como la Iglesia de St. Mark. Se establecía un concilio parroquial y de finanzas para empezar a planear el futuro. Se abrió la Casa de St. Vincent de Paul al oeste de la iglesia para proveer comida y ropa para las familias necesitadas y se rediseño el santuario para colocar un tabernáculo nuevo en la Iglesia. En 1995 la escuela de la Inmaculada Concepción fue abierta en el centro parroquial con los grados de prekinder al segundo grado. Cada año un grado seria agregado. Una casa adicional fue comprada en el número 1401 de la calle Bolivar para un crecimiento futuro.
En 1996 el Padre Juan Rivero fue nombrado párroco. Fue creada la mesa directiva de la parroquia. Como la Iglesia y la escuela empezaron a crecer, el Padre Juan animo buscar espacios nuevos para expandir la Iglesia y la escuela. Un comité fue nombrado para coordinar esto.
En Agosto del 2000, Monseñor Charles King fue nombrado párroco de la parroquia. Veintiún acres de tierra fueron compradas para la nueva parroquia, la cual incluía el plan para la escuela, el gimnasio, Iglesia, oficinas, y la rectoría ubicada en las calles Bonnie Brae y Windsor Drive. El comité de construcción de la escuela formo y planeo la construcción para finalizar la construcción en Julio del 2001. El edificio de la calle Elm fue vendido y la mudanza de la Iglesia empezó el 26 de Diciembre del 2003 y se empezó la misa en el gimnasio. El edificio de las oficinas fue terminado en Febrero del 2004 y el personal fue transferido al edificio nuevo el 20 de Febrero. La nueva Iglesia fue terminada en Octubre del 2004 y fue bendecida el 10 de Octubre del 2004.
